The DINNER ~ Wheelsy AU

She'd been working two days, a day to get a handle on the simple art of flower arranging (complicated stuff would come later) and to start learning delivery routes. It had been nice to be moving again, doing something, anything, constructive and today...

...today she actually teleported back to Bill's house with an armload of groceries and flailed. "I'M RUNNING LATE! DID THE ROAST IN THE CROCKPOT TURN OUT...wait. YOU"RE NOT HOME ARE YOU?!"

It probably wasn't time for him to be home. Meep. Talking to an empty house and running late on starting the meal still! Right! Dough! Dough first, for bread and a sweet dough for tarts. Those needed to rise, then she could start peeling potatoes...

Right. She could do this. She flipped on the radio, tossed her floral shop hat on the counter and stared COOKING. Dancing and cooking but hey who didn't need music to cook well? "Knife!" she called out, years of habit having the warning go out amidst the music so no one got hit by the knife headed toward the sink.

She tended to throw things when she was cooking. Yep.

Clarice poked Bill's belly gently and grinned, holding up a platter. "I was going to pass it to you you know..." she chuckled and leaned up to kiss his nose. "Dork." He was!


And yeah, though a lot of the local kids should know better. How many kids come in in the summer for camping and such?"

"Thanks." He took the platter and set about loading it up with the remaining tarts, claiming another for himself before bringing the platter and small dessert plates back to the table. Along with a server for the pie.

"There can be quite a few from the surrounding area. With the lake we get a lot of folks vacationing. Cheaper t'take a pontoon out there than head East for the ocean."

She watched Bill load the plate and let him get almost to the table before goosing him cheerfully and going back to her seat. What? He thought she wouldn't in front of his mom?

"That's fair I guess. I'll have to do a few good runs around the lake then, familiarize myself with spots people can fall down into..."

Bill jumped a step, bobbling the platter and sitting down with more than a little red in his features. Yeah, he didn't expect her to do that in front of his mom.

June looked on, bemused. "That's a good idea. Sounds like you'll be quite a bit of help out there."

Shame on you Bill! He should always expect Clarice to be interested in showing affection!

Besides, he had a really nice ass and touching was almost an imperative!

"I always try," she shrugged easily and brought June a dessert plate as well as one for herself. "Don't see the point of being a burden."

That was something good to hear, and it helped ease June's trepidation some. As long as it was true it meant that this girl wasn't just looking for Bill to support her.

Nodding her thanks to Clarice for the plate, June took the pie and server away from Bill, who seemed to think quartering the whole thing was the best way to divide it up.

Cutting the strawberry rhubarb down to more reasonable pieces she served one to Bill, and set another on Clarice's plate.

"Clarice has been a big help, 'round here an' town," Bill put in, digging into his piece of pie. "She even helped take care of the paper mess we had at the station when she was workin' there."

"An' here I thought them file boxes would hang around 'til Judgement Day," June joked lightly.

"I wasn't allowed to do or lift most things with the shoulder injury," she admitted with a grimace. "So paper was a great way to keep from going stir crazy here." Only so many times she could clean the house after all!

"Mmm, rhubarb. The tarts are berry-honey bits."

"Bill goes stir crazy with the paperwork," June chuckles. She helps herself to a tart, and makes an appreciate sound. "They're very good."

Bill is content enough to eat his dessert and let them talk. They seem to be getting along pretty well, which is great.

"Paperwork is a natural consequence of government," she chuckled. "It happens if you want to live in a sane world." Simple as that and she handled it as she could. As for the number of times she lived in an insane<?i< world, well, that wasn't dinner table conversation. "And a lot of people discount honey, it makes a lot healthier sweetener than sugar in most things , and my dad was partial to it." That and refined sugar wasn't exactly common where she grew up. "I substitute it a lot."

"Y'outta visit the farmer's market on Saturday if you haven't already," June noted, taking another bite of tart. "Sarah Higgins is a bee keeper an' sells jars of the honey out there. Best I've ever had."

"I think I walked through it once?" she admitted. "But you're right, I should check it out properly." Especially if there was honey!

She nodded, and there was the briefest of hesitations before June offered, "Maybe we could spend a day there t'gether. I could always use somethin' or other from there, an' I can show you who's got the best of everything."

Bill was helping himself to another tart, and paused mid-bite to glance at Clarice, waiting for her answer.

"You'd be my local guide?" she chuckled, grinning at June. "I might have to take you up on that. I had to get gouged on honey buying; I'd have to switch to sugar and that'd be bad for Bill."

"Sure, be happy to." June smiled. "'Specially if it means cutting back on some of Bill's sugar."

Bill just rolled his eyes. To hear them talk you'd think he was an addict or something.

"Well you two have fun with that. I'll just be here, drinkin' syrup." Hmph.

Well, he was a bit of one...granted, everyone had a weakness! Sugar was his krypton! "Next Sunday then? I should be off early, the flower shop is only open for an hour or two after church!" Not that she attended but that was how the schedule had been set!

"And there are better things to do with syrup than drink it Bill." Innocent look? Innocent look!

"Next Sunday sounds fine," June replied with a nod. It would be an opportunity to get to know Clarice better, and do some talking without Bill around.

Bill tried his damndest not to flush when he caught the drift in those words from Clarice, turning to eat the rest of his dessert quiet studiously.

June finished hers then rose from the table, reaching to gather the other empty plates so she could start washing.

"That was a very good meal. Thank you, Clarice."

*kicks them as well* I have a request in to DW guys about it

"Alright, pick a time in teh afternoon and I"ll do my best to be decent for a market trip!" Or at least not appearing in the florist smock? Something like that.

And Bill was damn cute when he was trying not to blush.

Yep.

"You're welcome Mrs. Pardy, but you don't have to worry about washing up, you're a guest."

"Alright, then." She gave a nod, but didn't falter in her clean up.

"No, it's okay. I don't mind in the least."

Bill just managed to save what was left of his pie and crust on his plate before June snagged the plate away. Finishing the small sliver, he licked filling from his thumb and shook his head at Clarice.

"Y'ain't gonna get her t'change her mind," he told her as June started the sink running.

"And it's best not to try to fight a mom?" she noted. Huh, well, since June was occupied it was obviously time for Clarice to lean across the table and steal a few of those last crumbs from his lips! Yep.

Tasty crumbs.

"We're sending a good chunk of the tarts home with you though if that's alright? We can't eat them all."

The kiss was a good one, good enough that he was more preoccupied by it than getting embarrassed. Sitting back in his seat with a smug smile after Clarice ended it, Bill sipped his sweet tea and made no complaint about losing some of the tarts to his mom.

"We'll thank you, I'll take a few but if there's a bunch your best bet would be t'send 'em on to the station with Bill. I'm sure the deputies would be pleased."

She far preferred he enjoy the kisses than be embarrassed by them, and she was happy to lean back on her end of the table with a cat and the canary look after the kiss as well! "Hmmm, they might...what do you think Bill, should I bring the tarts over to apologize for bossing around your deputies?"

"I reckon they'd appreciate that," Bill replied. "Though y'ain't gotta apologize for nothin', those lazy guys needed the kick in the butt."

June chuckled, setting a dish in the rack.

"Don't suppose you're one of those 'lazy guys', hm, Bill?"

"'Course not."

"Well, they seemed a little miffed that someone without a badge was doing the kicking," Clarice explained easily. "And no, I'd never kick Bill." Taunt and hand feed yes, but not kick!

"Oh, he can use a swift one every now an' again," June teased.

Bill just rolled his eyes good naturedly.

"They might've been bugged about it, but they still went t'work." And that's the important part.

"Everyone can," she shrugged happily. "Doesn't mean I'd want to kick him!" Maybe if he went crazy and was threatening the world or something but beyond that...

"And bugged is bad, hence tarts. That way next time I need to throw paperwork at their heads they grumble less!"
