The DINNER ~ Wheelsy AU

She'd been working two days, a day to get a handle on the simple art of flower arranging (complicated stuff would come later) and to start learning delivery routes. It had been nice to be moving again, doing something, anything, constructive and today...

...today she actually teleported back to Bill's house with an armload of groceries and flailed. "I'M RUNNING LATE! DID THE ROAST IN THE CROCKPOT TURN OUT...wait. YOU"RE NOT HOME ARE YOU?!"

It probably wasn't time for him to be home. Meep. Talking to an empty house and running late on starting the meal still! Right! Dough! Dough first, for bread and a sweet dough for tarts. Those needed to rise, then she could start peeling potatoes...

Right. She could do this. She flipped on the radio, tossed her floral shop hat on the counter and stared COOKING. Dancing and cooking but hey who didn't need music to cook well? "Knife!" she called out, years of habit having the warning go out amidst the music so no one got hit by the knife headed toward the sink.

She tended to throw things when she was cooking. Yep.

He grinned at her leer, then disappeared into the fridge to root around for butter.

"I hope it's a well made basket. Wicker an' the like tend t'give splinters."

"I'll be sure to take that into consideration," she noted with a cheerful nod. "Really it was just the idea of baiting you with cookie dough that amused me. I may find other ways to incorporate your love of the uncooked stuff."

He chuckled and closed the fridge, heading back to the stove top to finish the potatoes.

"Hm, well at least now I know to be careful about any cookie dough I might find lyin' around. Tipped your hand, there."

"Eh, well, it's a kindness on my part. I wouldn't want you to get trapped when you really can't spare the time," she pointer out. "You are a busy sheriff and I don't think I can call you in sick."

Laughing at that as he dropped a stick of butter into the potato mash, he shook his head.

"That's a pretty practical approach to it. Makes me think you really were considerin' it."

He added milk and finished making the potatoes, helping himself to a taste when they were done.

"How're we for time?"

"I try to consider most things, thinking about you is just fun though so I do it a lot." She tasted her mix, grinned, and set the bowl aside. "And unless she's early we're doing alright?"

"Happy t'be a good thought of yours," he said with a smirk.

Dusting his hands, he nodded towards the hallway.

"Alright, I'm gonna catch a quick shower, then. Be out in a few."

She leaned over to kiss him and grinned. "Alright, I won't even hop in to bug you." She had too much still to do! "Maybe a shared shower tonight though?"

"Hm, that sounds good t'me." He smiled against her lips and returned the kiss, then disappeared down the hallway for a shower.

She watched him down the hall as a matter of course, after all the back view was just as good as the front, but once he was gone she turned back to her work. Tarts to stuff and bread to bake and stuff to do...

When was his mother due again?

Awhile later Bill was walking back into the kitchen, buttoning up a clean shirt.

"Hey, do you remember if my mom said five or six?"

"Awww...I missed a dessing?" she teased, pulling bread out of the oven. "And how should I know? You talked to her!"

"Sorry, I'll let you watch next time." He chuckled, and tugged his shirt straight.

"I talked to her, but I told you for when I forget." And so she knew when to make dinner,but clearly reminding him was the most important reason.

"See that you do!" she teased, setting the bread pan down and covering it with a towel to keep warm. "And I'm your schedule book? Since when is that a girlfriend duty?!"

"Since always." Heading for a cupboard, he began pulling down plates to set the table.

"Rememberin' dates an' times is a big girlfriend duty. Guys are never good with that stuff."

"Is this some world rule I was never made aware of?!" she laughed. "Your reality needs a manual! A rule book! And I think it was 6."

"Well you already know I'm forgetful with my lunch an' all. Dates an' times aren't any different." He laughed.

"Six o'clock, so then she outta be here in a bit. She always shows early."

"I figure that's because you like people feeding you," she chuckled. "If you 'forget' then people are more likely to try to throw food at you!" It was just her job, now, to make sure it was some semblance of healthy!

"Alright, so...and minute now huh?"

"Well that, too." He admitted, looking up from his table setting to throw her a grin.

Finishing setting the table, he glances at the clock.

"Yeah, probably. Need help with anything else?"

"Well, you could dump the roast and veggies from the crock pot into a serving dish?" she offered. "Or cut bread? The tarts need to bake a bit longer."

"Serving dish, right."

Glancing around, he waffled between which cabinet to go to. Surely he had a serving dish of some type somewhere.

Picking a door, he opened it and dug around.

"How 'bout a big bowl?"

His arm stuck up over the counter top holding a big blue mixing bowl.

"...that works for the potatoes?" she laughed. "Are you seriously lost in your own kitchen Bill?" That was...kind of hilarious.

In a weird way though.

"Top cabinet lover!"

"Well hell, I hardly ever use half the stuff in here," he said, searching for something for the meat.

"Hell, I been usin' the same plate, glass an' silverware for years now. Minus a pot or pan, I never needed nothin' else t'feed myself with."

"Then where did all your kitchen stuff come from Bill?" Did he have strangers loading his house with cookware?!

Maybe it was a 'getting your own house' tradition to give kitchen stuff? His world was weird!

"I think I'm going to cry Bill."

[wheelsy_sheriff]

"My mom." As evidence, he pulled out the long sought serving dish, with decorative leaf pattern. "An' other folks. Some of it's stuff they thought I needed, some of it's stuff that never made it home after it came here with food in it, I dunno."

He shrugged, and began loading meat into the dish from the crockpot.

"Why does that make you wanna cry?"
