The DINNER ~ Wheelsy AU

She'd been working two days, a day to get a handle on the simple art of flower arranging (complicated stuff would come later) and to start learning delivery routes. It had been nice to be moving again, doing something, anything, constructive and today...

...today she actually teleported back to Bill's house with an armload of groceries and flailed. "I'M RUNNING LATE! DID THE ROAST IN THE CROCKPOT TURN OUT...wait. YOU"RE NOT HOME ARE YOU?!"

It probably wasn't time for him to be home. Meep. Talking to an empty house and running late on starting the meal still! Right! Dough! Dough first, for bread and a sweet dough for tarts. Those needed to rise, then she could start peeling potatoes...

Right. She could do this. She flipped on the radio, tossed her floral shop hat on the counter and stared COOKING. Dancing and cooking but hey who didn't need music to cook well? "Knife!" she called out, years of habit having the warning go out amidst the music so no one got hit by the knife headed toward the sink.

She tended to throw things when she was cooking. Yep.

He looped his arm around her in turn, and rested his head against one of the cupboards behind them.

"I'm sure she picked up on some of that. An' she's still fussin' about other things. She'll come around."

He hoped. He also hopes she wasn't right about what she said. Nothing like a mom's worry to plant doubt.

"Dinner went good." There was that, at least.

"Other things I should be worried about?" she asked quietly. "I know I'm not what everyone was expecting." At all.

It was nice to just relax against him though, warm and solid and there. Sometimes people just needed...people. That was alright wasn't it?

"It ain't that, it's-- "

Looking down at her he was caught a moment by the way she was leaning against him, the feel of her against his side, and how even though they were sitting up on the kitchen counter it felt comfortable, and right.

Sometimes people did just need people, and despite what his mom had said, it was good to have someone here with him. For him, enjoying his company as much as he enjoyed hers.

"It's nothin'," he decided, bending his head down to press a kiss to Clarice's crown. "I know what I'm doin'."

"It's nothin' huh?" she drawled cheerfully, lifting her face against his lips. She was comfy, and a bit lazy at the moment. She was perfectly content to stay exactly as she was for a while. "I do promise I"m not using you...not in any bad sense of the term."

Bill was happy to sit, as well.

"Just the 'good' sense," he joked lightly, giving her side a squeeze.

"Hmmm, yep. Just in the 'healthy physical exercise' sense." Totally.

He smirked to that.

"An' that I completely approve of."

The smile shortened, and he gave a one shouldered shrug.

"I think mostly she's worried this is happenin' too fast, an' too soon."

"Ah," well...what could she do to fix that? Not much, sadly. "It'd probably be a lot harder to live together too long and not be dating. The hands off policy can get really frustrating."

"Must be my irresistible charm," Bill replied, trying to play smug with an ego.

"An' I'm tired of bein' the guy playin' it safe an' missin' his chances. Took me long enough, but I finally learned that lesson."

"Mmmm, and your ass. You have a lovely, touchable ass!" she grinned and tilted her head back to kiss his chin. "And hey, some things are hard to learn you know? No one likes being out where they can get hurt...not really."

The compliment made him laugh, and he was grinning when she kissed him.

"Whatever it is caught your attention, I'll take it."

He nodded to the rest of her words, the heel of his shoe thumping lightly on the cabinet below him.

"I'm tired enough of that. But I know that ain't your aim, an' my mom'll figure it eventually, too."

"I know life can't help but happen most days, but if we don't stop to appreciate the people we've got then what's the point?" she chuckled softly. "Your mom is kind of scary though. Not nearly as toothy as Mr. Creed but she could hold her own I think."

"You're afraid of my mom?" Bill chuckled, and he was teasing. He knew his mom could be kind of scary.

"She's a strong, independent woman. Bein' on her own raisin' me, I guess he had t'be. That's also what made her real protective, so yeah, she ain't one to tangle with."

"Not afraid! Wary. Wary is totally the term!" she grinned and hugged his arm around her. "Do you know what she wants for you, really? I know parents all have ideas about what future they want for their kids..."

He thought about it a minute, then shrugged a shoulder.

"To be happy, I guess. I think she worries about me bein' left on my own."

"Well..." crap. She couldn't promise he wouldn't. That was...not good. Still. "...do the best I can." And at least help him get over Starla?

Looking down at her, he quirked a smile and hugged her.

"It's just my mom bein' a mom. Don't feel obligated t'meet all her expectations at once." Leaning in, he kissed her again. "I happen t'think we're doin' just fine."

"I don't have that many super powers," she laughed. To fill all the expectations at once? That would take...a reality bender probably. Not that they didn't exist but Clarice certainly wasn't one!

"You really think?"

"Sure." He nodded. "We get along well, you ain't had t'stick me with one of your sharp pointy things yet, an' I like you. It's been fun, an' it's good havin' a girlfriend I know actually cares about me."

To Bill's mind these were all evidence that it was going well so far.

"To be fair you still have my decent sharp pointy things in lock up at the station." Because, apparently, they were safer there! "And I wouldn't want to stick anyone with the wooden ones I've made, they'd get infected or something!" Not that anyone had earned a stabbing. Still.

"And of course I care, you're worth caring about."

"I think around you even a toothpick has potential t'be a deadly weapon."

She had skills.

"An' see, when you say things like that, makes me feel like a lucky guy."

"Well, properly applied..." Any teleporter could be dangerous really!

"You're not lucky, you're just amazing, and relaxing, and fun to be around!" She reached up to tangle a hand in his hair cheerfully. more than happy to compliment.

Bill ducked his head away from the hair ruffling, grinning.

"Well then, lucky someone finally noticed my amazingness," he laughed. "Lucky or not, it still means we got a good thing goin' here, don't you think?"

Awww, she was going to have to actually sit up to chase his hair wasn't she? Yep, she was. Be afraid Bill!

"It's been there all the while Bill, I'm just the one who got to ignore the local rules about precedent and stuff." No lines, no rules about waiting for Bill to officially announce he was free, nope. Not for her!

And he was going to have to twist away to save his hair, while trying not to fall off the counter. Not an easy task.

"So then I guess that means you're the lucky one." He grinned, pulling his head back as far as he could.
