Wheelsy AU ~ Phonecall 1
Starla tapped her fingers on the counter and held the phone tucked next to her ear. It was clean, and neat, but not exactly the color she'd wanted for her kitchen. She'd have to see if the rental agreement would let her change the counters to something lighter, something less black marble and more wood perhaps? A light pine? Regardless, it was something to think about while the phone rang.
And rang.
And rang.
Of course Bill wasn't home, it was the middle of the day over on that coast! Why had she thought he might be? She nibbled a lip and heard the distinctive rattle of the answering machine getting ready to click over. All the money the government had thrown at Wheelsy to get it rebuilt from it's 'natural disaster' and Bill still hadn't upgraded to a better machine. "You still have a tape, Bill?" she laughed when it finally clicked on. "Still? Haven't I been telling you to upgrade since before I came out here? What happened to the one I got you for Christmas? I eve put a nice recording on it for you!" He was still Bill. Ever, and always, Bill.
"Anyway, that part I told you about? I got it! Not even an understudy, isn't that great?" She was beaming ta her kitchen, a bright, accomplished smile. "It's just like I dreamed back when we were little!" Oh, click, message ended. Oh she hadn't even...
...right, dialing back, listening to the rings. "Sorry about that. You need a better machine Bill! Anyway, I was wondering if you could get the 15th and 16th off next month? I've been saving a bit and I do still need an escort to the premier of our movie. Call me back alright?"

"No, it's me. But I'd say the real important question is how much is a 'bit'? Any idea when you'll be comin' back?"

He was glad she got the part she'd wanted, and knows that sort of thing has to take some time.
Taking the cordless handset with him, Bill headed for the kitchen.
"I dunno, Starla. Y'sure you want me there in Hollywood? I'm bound t'stick out like a sore thumb."

Bill still wasn't so excited about them having a movie. The only reason he was onboard at all was because of Starla's involvement with it.
Still, she was inviting him. And hell, he could never say no to her.
"There gonna be a lot of cameras an' folks askin' questions?"
no subject
And it was...cathartic. And got the information out to the public in a way that they understood! It was important! "You'll look good in a suit Bill!"
no subject
Opening the fridge, he pulled out a beer and the hiss of the cap matched the sound of his sigh of giving in.
"I guess I could swing some time off. Dave owes me a favor, so he'll probably be alright takin' on a few extra hours t'cover."

"Wait... who's payin' for all of this? Because I'm not lettin' you spend all that on me."

Shaking his head and smiling, Bill pulled out a chair from the kitchen table and sat down.
"Fine. But I'm gettin' lunch an' any other meals we eat while I'm there."
Just to be fair.
no subject
"Besides, I'm landing you in a spot with getting a suit!"
no subject
He laughed, hearing her better now that the shuffling was done.
"A suit, suit? Or a tux?"
One he could manage, the other... they might need to do some shopping.
no subject
"Whichever you want Bill. Both will look good I guess and I'm wearing a nice dress? I won't force you to wear something you don't want though!" Down the hall Clarice's door opened. See he was on the phone she just waved cheerfully as she bopped into the bathroom to brush her teeth.
no subject
He really was, but there wasn't any way he could just leave Wheelsy. Especially in the state it was.
"Alright. I guess I'll-- " The movement caught his attention, and he looked and saw Clarice. Switching the phone to his other ear, Bill cleared his throat and kept talking. "I guess I'll surprise you, then."
no subject
Toooothbrushing...and if her ears didn't lie to her, well...Bill had a date! Gleeful look? Gleeful look indeed!
no subject
"But you're draggin' me out this time. I'll do my best not to embarrass you."
no subject
Hmmm, how did a girl with a toothbrush in her mouth communicate with the guy on the phone? Clarice thought a moment then held up her hands, fingers crooked so together they made a heart. Sweetheart on the phone?
no subject
Seeing Clarice, Bill felt his features heat, and he ducked his head.
"An' I said I wasn't gonna embarrass you. Y'don't gotta worry."
no subject
Ohhhh, that was a blush! Totally a date! Time for a double thumbs up and a grin around the clamped toothbrush.
no subject
The thumbs up only made it worse, and Bill waved Clarice away.
"Because I'm gonna be real upset if that's the reason you're gettin' me dressed up in a monkey suit, Starla."
no subject
"I'm getting you out here to see what I've been working on Bill. Don't you try to think on any other conspiracies!"
no subject
He was at it again with the blushing, this time at the thought of going out to see Starla.
"It'll be nice t'see you again."

Smile warm and pleased, Bill didn't care about the clock at all.
"I just got home, so it's alright. Be up watchin' Sports Center or somethin'. You probably got a day ahead of you, though. Big actress an' all, so if you gotta go I'll let you."
